My quest for a youthful beauty has led me to try practically every new skin care trend that has come out on the market since I was 20. I thought buying expensive products with ingredients I couldn’t pronounce would somehow cryogenically preserve me and keep me from aging. When nothing really worked (and sometimes irritated my sensitive skin), my quest led me on a path to my roots and the discovery of a history of natural skin care that has been practiced for centuries.
It led me to my own history and the line of women before me. My great-grandmother, Angelina, was an incredible woman who was educated a century ago in medicine, in a time and place where people in general weren’t educated, never mind a woman! After completing her education, she came back to her village to help people who were ill. People back then did not have ready access to expensive medications and she used her knowledge in natural medicines. Initially, she was labeled a witch because people were afraid, but eventually they began to trust her, and her knowledge and abilities became well known and accepted. She had a great knowledge of plants, extracts and oils that had been passed on since time untold.
Today we readily put toxins on our skin that we wouldn’t use on our animals. The ever-present pressure to look younger and more beautiful has driven us to use anything the beauty industry tells us will do the job.
The truth is that beauty comes from within. How we think, eat, sleep, love, take care of ourselves, others and the world around us helps us bring out our natural beauty. Nothing replaces self-love, confidence, generosity and gratefulness to give us that healthy bloom, magnetism and ‘je ne sais quoi’ that we seek.
I do believe that to treat ourselves to luxurious body care products is a great way to make ourselves feel pampered and beautiful. In honour of my great-grandmother, I’ve researched recipes from around the world that have been developed, some since ancient times and some more recently, but all that use natural ingredients to enhance our unique beauty and help make some wishes come true. Natural ingredients are truly magical, and I can tell you that once you try them, you won’t want to go back! Your skin will love you for it. So will your soul.
